I wonder if the threat of KOSA passing will push people to try decentralized and federated platforms again. A lot of the Elon exodus-ers went to Blue Sky but I wonder how far people will go if this goes through. I can't see circumvention tools like darknet networks or VPNs being stopped if people elect to use them.

Gonna go in the "bedroom" so I can move this PC to the "living room". Will be a test bench of sorts, wanna explore some self hosting, media server etc options on this thing just to get myself familiar with the tools etc. Eventually thinking I wanna build a real NAS. Dear Americans,
If we Europeans can carry what basically amounts to a small garage worth of tools inside a small 4.5m van with a 1.6L engine, chances are you don't need a a 6M long behemoth with a 6.2L V8 just to carry a hand-pushed lawn mower.
Sincerely,
A European.

Are there any existing Linux distros that can turn a laptop into a digital typewriter (and do nothing else)?
I'm looking for a distro that only does word processing, file management, and allows exporting to USB. No internet, no Bluetooth, etc.
I can only find this discontinued project:

There is a ton of software that is *almost* the same as some other piece of software.
It might use the same syntax/API but entirely different under the hood code, or maybe it's the same code but distributed with a different set of tools.
While this seems great, the not-exactly-identical experience causes an expectation problem.
"Great, I don't have to learn" is almost always followed by "This sucks because it's not 100% the same"

I’m reminded of a very old Slashdot comment that I return to which I will share in its entirety. Not the article, not the source, but this single insightful comment from Shannon Love that still rings true:
“I can relate to Zawinski's frustration and many others do as well. I notice that it seems to effect those with more experience than those newer to computing.
When one first acquires a new tool, whether it is hardware, software or a woodworking plane, the very act of learning how use the tool itself works is highly engaging. Just futzing about figuring out how the new tool works is an end in itself.
However, after one has spent 20 years learning the ends and out of each season's new tools the joy fades. One becomes progressively less interested in the tools itself and more interested in product you want to use the tool to make. The time spent futzing with the tool is not engaging but frustrating and wasteful. You want to get the primary work done not spend all your time adjusting your tools.
How many times over the years has Zawinski wrestled with a problem similar to his Linux sound issue? The thrill of solving such a problem is long gone, baby.
The Linux community is dominated by people who enjoy the process of learning and using the tool itself. They are the kind of people who take the toaster apart to see how it works. The vast majority of desktop users, however, just want to make toast.
People like Zawinski, who have taken apart their fair share of toasters, also now just want to make toast. At present, Linux doesn't let him do that.”

A little bummed that my Asus K56CB's battery has seemingly crashed or messed up its calibration after a short period in storage. Especially since I REALLY enjoy using it with #LinuxMint - seems the usual laptop power tools fail to solve the problem. It used to be at 2-3 hours, and now it's a solid 35 minutes. Effectively UPS rather than a laptop battery :-/

**Always try desktop Linux distributions on real hardware! Do not use virtual machines.**
Linux desktops heavily rely on graphics acceleration to deliver a good experience. Most VM tools are meant for servers and do not have good (if any) GPU support.

It's great to see how generative AI has shot into society's consciousness. At the same time, it is frightening to see how ignorant and risk-averse the majority of people are when using the services. Although the hype is probably over, many people still seem to be using the AI tools of large platforms.

TIme for security house keeping. Don't have a lot of tools and have to brute force things in XLS (shudder). I would love tools that would help, but I suspect if I mention that I would be volunteered to write them. Have to match up five different files, flag the various actions needed to be taken then split it out for the personnel responsible for security in their area to take action on.

The fourth "R", REPAIR. Too often, the device was made that we cannot repair it. If we can repair it, we must take it to an authorized place & have the privilege of overpaying to have a simple part replaced.
I might be a techie but I learned how to use a welding torch and other tools. I could strip and rebuild lawn mower engines, snowmobile engines, outboard marine engines. I could also create head gaskets for car engines. Can't do that now.
